Great Questions: Doesn’t God love all people? Why do we need to be specific?

Great Question:

A congregant brought this question to me. “Our lawn sign says God loves trans people. Why do we need to be specific? Doesn’t God love all people?”

 Pastor Meagan’s Answer:

Great question! Yes, absolutely. God loves all people, and all creation, without condition. See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1

And, throughout scriptures, God brings that love especially to those in pain or need. God hears the cry of those in need. Psalm 34:18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

In many places, God calls us to do justice in this world, especially for those who are vulnerable. Jeremiah 22:3 Thus says the Lord: Do justice and righteousness, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed. And do no wrong or violence to the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place.

Jesus himself sought out those who were on the margins of society—tax collectors, women, Samaritans, lepers, even Romans—and brought healing, peace, and justice to them. And in this time of laws being passed that are targeting the lives and well-being of trans people and their families, they are among those who are relegated to the margins.

So when we say God loves trans people, we are not saying God loves ONLY trans people, but that God hears the cry of those who are in pain and oppressed. God loves all people. And in this time, we counter messages that harm and affirm that God loves trans people too.
