    Our North Star
    Series: (All)
March 5, 2017. Do we need a kind of North Star in our lives? Today we hear the Gospel story of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness. How did he know he was being tempted? Pastor Penny preaches on this text and says that he knew because what the devil was offering didn't match up with his mission. Our mission, like Jesus', is to help and care for others. Knowing this helps us to know when we're being tempted. And we can resist temptation because of our loving relationship with God, a relationship that becomes our North Star that will guide us home. *** [Keywords: Adam and Eve Atticus Finch Garden of Eden Jesus Our North Star Pastor Penny Holste Polaris Prodigal Son Satan To Kill a Mockingbird accepting food aligns with north pole all these kingdoms will be yours angry comment at our computer attacked baptized care for others clear temptation computer constant communication crossword puzzle crucified desert devil didn't match up died don't really need dreams for his son drudgery email eons facebook fall on our faces fasted field of temptations forgives us frivolous full stomach guide us home he had to go home help help and care for others hours on phone how we use our time hurt impact innocent jumping off building kind of star knew his mission lawyer in small Southern town lead them home safely look out for other people loving relationship with God loving relationship with son make it home safely mall mission moral muscles navigation night sky not a particular star not motivated by dread or fear offering one more cookie or drink one more movie or video game one person in church and another person in life online store our mission paid a price poor traveling healer post something sarcastic power and glory push buy quoting Scripture recognize represented represents black man rescue us resist temptation rise again sacrificed for us sailors saved by angels send his son to be tempted session in gym spur of the moment decision to purchase something stars rotate strength to withstand taught us tempt the angels tempter they may be one as we are one understand the human situation unfairly accused when we're being tempted white woman wilderness worship the devil]

It's all too easy to live our lives without knowing how other people live theirs. But when that bubble bursts, what do we do? Being exposed to new truths can be overwhelming. Pastor Penny relates this to how it must have been for Jesus' disciples, wondering whether they were on the right track following him. Jesus shared his vision with the disciples. Series: (All)
February 5, 2017. In Matthew 5:13-20, Jesus tells us that we're the salt of the earth and the light of the world. In the time of Jesus, salt and light were very important. We're important too. Especially now, with our politics and our communities and country divided more than ever, Jesus urges us not to hide our light. Instead of building walls between us and those with whom we disagree, we should build bridges. We're reminded just how much power God gives us, and in her sermon today Pastor Penny talks about some ways we can be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. *** [Keywords: "I am a Marine and a Muslim, ask me anything" Boeing Christ Lutheran Church Enterprise Feed My Starving Children Good Shepherd Lutheran Gospel Jesus Latin word for salt Marine Matthew 5:13-20 McDonald's Pastor Penny Roman soldiers Starbucks Super Bowl abusively airplanes awesome breaking the law bridges build building bushel basket cars coffee communities community meal controversial country courage daycare demonize disagree discard ideas discard people disengage disengaging divided eating with outcasts energy faithful work family fire firefighters fulfill fulfilled fulfilling give one another strength goodness grievances hamburgers healing on the Sabbath hide our light hobbies hold each other up important latchkey after school law light of the world listen lose flavor marches negative statement neutrality new administration oil lamps other side outside walls paid patience plural in the Greek politics power powerless prayers preserve food product promises we make and keep protests relationship sacrifice salary salt of the earth stereotype strength sun went down tempted trade commodity turning off understanding unshakeable volunteer efforts walls willing to talk wisdom word association words of encouragement world community]
