Give a Meal a Month!
Program Purpose:
- to stimulate the giving of congregations to the food pantry they choose to support
- to encourage on-going giving for an on-going need
- offers structured giving to meet the needs of food pantrie
- a way for contributors to know that what they are giving is what is needed
- offers a convenient, affordable way for everyone to fight hunger
- provides emergency assistance to members and visitors at CLC - the purpose is to share with one another
Operation:
- each month a coordinator within the congregation plans a menu for the month. This menu consists of four or five non-perishable items representing a balanced meal.
- copies of the menu are made available to the congregation through the monthly newsletter along with the yellow bag bearing the GAMAM logo in the cabinet in the Fellowship Hall.
- members of the congregation are given the entire month to deliver the menu items in their yellow bags to the display at church (the due date is always the third Sunday of each month)
- at the end of the month, the contents of the bags are delivered to the food pantry (we deliver alternately to Feed My People and Webster-Rock Hill Ministries food pantries)
Impact:
- this has been a successful program at Christ-WG. Each month, 15-20 bags of food are collected and delivered. Both food pantries we partner with are able to distribute balanced meals to families of all sizes. This program continues all year long, including the summer months when food pantries traditionally have lower donations of food.
Menus for AUGUST and SEPTEMBER 2010:
We encourage our members to think healthy when buying canned items by searching for low-sodium, low-fat & low or no-sugar versions. Also try to avoid items with transfats, hydorgenated oils and high fructose corn syrup, thus giving the clients at the food pantries an opportunity to receive healthier items. In addition, just throw a can of tuna, chicken, beef or beans into your cart each time you shop - protein is always a needed item at the food pantries. Thank you so much!
AUGUST 2010 menu: Bag of brown rice, 2 cans of diced tomatoes, bag of lentils, raisins or dried cranberries , box of powdered milk or box of tea bags. Bring to church by Sun., August 15.
SEPTEMBER 2010 menu: Large bag of oat cereal (generic Cheerios), box of breakfast/granola bars, jar of peanut butter, bag of dried fruit or apple chips, powdered milk or cans of evaporated milk. Bring to church by Sun., September 19.
